A traffic police officer who last May lost his arm in a harrowing incident while on duty in Luqa has described this tragic event in his life as one which made him “a better person”.

Officer Simon Schembri, who was run over by a teenage driver, confided about his experience during the launch of a foundation bearing his name at the Presidential Palace in San Anton.

Presided by Inspector Herman Mula, the Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation aims to give psychological and financial support to members of disciplined forces.

It also aims to raise awareness on the perils these officers faced on a regular basis while on duty.

In a short message, an emotional Mr Schembri thanked Mater Dei Hospital staff who looked after him during his lengthy recovery period and the public for the support shown.

“My life changed overnight. I am not the Simon of before. I am now a better person,” he said.

President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, who presided over the launch, hailed the initiative saying it was a celebration of the precious values of life, solidarity and generosity.

The foundation is composed of a nine-member board which includes representatives from the police, the Civil Protection Department, the Armed Forces, prison warders and paramedics.
