Smaller social housing units could be the solution to the rental crisis, as they would be seen by tenants as temporary solutions - and not permanent ones, the president of the Malta Employers' Association Doris Sammut Bonnici told Times Talk.

Making social housing subject to regular review is another of the measures being proposed by the MEA in its pre-Budget document. The idea, she explained, was to offer support to those who needed it while they needed it, but encouraging them to move on once their situation improved.

Having studio flats or small two-bedroomed units would therefore be more effective than having large three-bedroomed ones, she said.
