John Guillaumier may be waving his trump card worded ‘millstone’ triumphantly, indicating the deserved fate of clerical paedophiles, little knowing that God’s ways are inscrutable, His mercy is infinite and He does not want the death of the sinner but that he repents and lives.

St Paul had a word or two about the denouncement of certain abuses, especially in his first epistle to the Corinthians.

Jesus’s warning is even more authoritative: “Amen I say to you, the publicans and harlots are entering the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of Justice and you did not believe him, whereas you, seeing it, did not even repent afterwards that you might believe him” (Matt 21: 31-32).

So not all is lost even for these people with such a painful and sleazy background because who knows how many of them availed themselves of their only escape routes accessible: mercy, repentance and faith.

For me it is even more disturbing and shocking that a decent law-abiding citizen, living in a Catholic environment, should spend his unlimited energy in debasing God and His Church by his pen. Why not put aside his erroneous philosophy, repugnance for things of the spirit and bitter antagonism towards the Catholic Church and embrace a sane rationale and put on the armour plated vest of faith?

We save our souls with a living faith which is a free gift of God, which we can never deserve to obtain by any acts we perform or through our merits.

Of course, this must be complemented by repentance, penance and good deeds.
