Valletta FC's new owners are set to make a statement of intent as they offered a two-year contract to track and sprint sensation Usain Bolt, ESPN reported on Monday night.

Jamaican Bolt is currently in Australia where he is currently undergoing a trial at A-League side Central Coast Mariners as he looks to earn himself a professional football contract.

Last week, the former 100m and 200m Olympic champion attract world attention when he netted a brace for the Mariners during a friendly against Macarthur South West United.

However, according to ESPN, he may well cut his stay in Australia short as the Malta champions have made a lucrative offer to the Jamaican to move to the BOV Premier League and spearhead their charge towards a place in the Champions League group stages.

Valletta managing director and CEO Ghasston Slimen told ESPN they hope to sign the eight-time Olympic sprint champion in time for him to participate in their Maltese Super Cup match on December 13 against Balzan.

"A champion is always welcome and at Valletta FC we believe nothing is impossible," said Slimen, adding that he hoped Bolt could pave the way for more athletes to switch sports.

Earlier yesterday, Bolt's agent in Australia, Tony Rallis, told ESPN that "there is a club in Europe that has offered Bolt a two-year contract. They have been taken over by new owners who have aspirations of Champions League football."

The Citizens have just been taken over by Dubai investors Sanban Group and the new investors immediately set their goal of guiding the club to the top of European football.

During the signing of the agreement in Dubai, the Sanban Group investors had made no secret of bringing a number of top-quality signings and it is understood they were behind the signing of Bojan Kaljevic from Balzan.

Bolt, who retired from track and field in 2017, has long publicly expressed his desire to play professional football and previously trained with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

If he accepts the deal and appears in Valletta's Super Cup game, then it will be a fitting way to mark the 10-year anniversary of his triumph at the Beijing Olympics.

Valletta FC have won the Maltese Premier League five of the past eight seasons to earn a Champions League place, but they have never advanced past the second qualifying round.

This summer they were eliminated by Albanian side Kukesi in the Preliminary Round of the Champions League on the away goals' rule after a 1-1 draw which saw them concede a last-gasp equaliser.
