A young engineer from Pembroke scooped a €110,000 supercar and €24,000 in cash after winning a dream car competition Best of the Best (BOTB).

Gilbert Azzopardi, 24, had almost given up trying his luck a few months ago, but was left speechless after giving it one more chance as he received the good news via a video call.

“I just can’t believe it.This has completely made my year,” Mr Azzopardi said.

BOTB is a car drawing played weekly by purchasing tickets and “spotting the ball”.

Players are shown a picture of a football match and have to guess where the ball should be. When the contest closes, the judges decide where the centre of the ball is and whoever is closest to this point wins.

Mr Azzopardi said: “I started playing about a year ago, but one week I came so close to winning that I almost gave up. I thought I am never going to win this, I am too unlucky. I decided to give it one more go and won...

“I currently drive a Renault Megan but now I must be the only person in Malta with a Mercedes AMG GT – and definitely the youngest. It will probably go from one end of Malta to the other in a couple of minutes.

“Maybe the €24,000 cash prize can help with the insurance and petrol,” he said, adding that he would invest anything left over.

British company BOTB was founded by William Hindmarch in 1999 and has handed over the keys to more than €28m worth of supercars.

Listed on the stock market, it has high-profile stands at airports and in Britain’s biggest shopping centres, with 75% of all people playing online at BOTB.com.
