Din l-Art Ħelwa is celebrating the 400th anniversary of St Mary’s Tower, Comino, with an open weekend.

The public will enjoy living history displays by the Historic Re-enactment Group of Malta and guided tours throughout will be given by Din l-Art Ħelwa volunteers between 11am and 6pm.

St Mary’s Tower was built in 1618 during the reign of Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt and it is thought that its design was by Vittorino Cassar, the son of Gerolamo Cassar who was responsible for the building of Valletta.

Standing high over Comino’s clear water at 67 metres above sea level, it dominates the straits between Malta and Gozo and its 360-degree view from its roof is breathtaking.

The open weekend is taking place on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free of charge and donations for the upkeep of the tower will be gladly received. The public is advised to check the public ferry schedules from Ċirkewwa or Marfa.
