With its usual see-how-kind-we-are attitude, the Labour government, via Finance Minister Edward Scicluna, announced a few weeks ago that all workers – full-time and part-time - will be receiving a cheque for €40 or €50. Good. Every drop counts in this day and age when the cost of living is rising every day.

I listened attentively to see if there was something for pensioners too. But I was disappointed. There was absolutely nothing left for us and I asked myself: how is it possible that this section of the population is left aside?

Does the Labour government/Finance Minister not realise that expenses tend to increase when one reaches a certain age? Pensioners are finding it really difficult to make ends meet, more so when, added to their daily requirements, there is a visit to the chemist.

Scicluna promised a review for pensioners in the next Budget. Hopefully, this increase will really reflect prices that are soaring every day. One also hopes the elderly generation will not be insulted by being given peanuts. More so when our country is supposed to be enjoying a sound economy.
