US President Donald Trump said the United Nations had not lived up to its potential, as he announced he will be attending this year's United Nations General Assembly that is set to open on Tuesday.

Trump is set to speak Tuesday morning at the two-day annual assembly that brings together world leaders.

The US President has frequently criticized the international body and said the US, which is responsible for 22% of the UN's $5.4-billion budget, pays too much.

Two months ago, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that as of June 30, the core UN budget had a deficit of $139 million and the United Nations had "never faced such a difficult cash flow situation this early in the calendar year".
