ST ANDREWS 0
SLIEMA WANDERERS 2
Farrugia 45
Jefferson 48
Two beautiful goals on either side of half-time were enough for Buttigieg’s Sliema to lower opponents, St Andrews’ colours.
The match was suspended nine minutes into the game, after referee, Stefan Pace took all players off because of thick columns of black smoke emanating from the chimneys of the Malta Dairy Products’ plant, engulfed the pitch. The match continued three minutes later.
The Wanderers looked to be a subdued lot in the first half with a display, which did not merit a goal.
However, they found the net just before half-time when they won a free-kick in a central position about eight metres outside the penalty area.
An exquisite Jean Paul Farrugia curling kick flew over the Saints wall and beyond the reach of goalkeeper, Matthew Calleja Cremona.
The Blues were in for another bonanza four minutes after the restart. A long ball from the halfway line to Jefferson was fully exploited by the Brazilian who chested the ball down and steered it into the top corner.
Jefferson was voted the Player of the match.
