Dramatic footage of a crash that sent a car rolling at the crossroads near the Addolorata Cemetery has emerged on social media.

The 33-year-old driver of the Peugeot, which appears to have been hit by a BMW running a red light, was grievously injured. The incident happened in the morning of September 8.

The BMW 320D was being driven by a 30-year-old man from Marsascala. The Peugeot driver, from Birżebbuġa was assisted by Civil Protection Department officers and a medical team. He suffered grievous injuries.

A video of the CCTV that recorded the incident was uploaded to Facebook in the page Bad Driving Malta.

It shows the driver of the BMW and other commuters rushing to assist the Peugeot driver.

On that same day Times of Malta reported the Red Cross Malta president Edward Gruppetta saying that those behind the wheel were often the first responders in traffic incidents.

The first moments, he pointed out, could prove crucial in saving lives but not enough motorists were familiar with first aid.

He had insisted that prospective motorists should undergo mandatory first aid courses.

According to the latest statistics, there were nine road fatalities in the second quarter of this year, when 3,837 accidents were reported, down by six per cent over the same period in 2017.

In July, dashcam footage caught another dramatic incident when a car overturned in Marsa.

The police had said nobody was injured in the incident, with the footage showing the young driver emerging from the car after a dangerous manoeuvre.
