Many years ago, I was a driver of buses, double-deckers, single-deckers and coaches.

Once you got behind the wheel, you were responsible for the bus. It was your domain. If people were standing, you would have to tell them to move back to let more people on and not to stand close to the driver, so s/he can have a clear view from his mirrors. At the end of your shift, there was a ‘book’ where you would log any problems with the bus, such as a leaking air condition unit, damaged seats, anything.

Also, a bus was never allowed to be parked if it was dirty or not filled up with fuel, all set for the next trip.

The only time a driver was not responsible, was when s/he were reversing because the bus conductor was then in charge.

Of course, nowadays everyone is too busy on one’s mobile phones to think of anyone other than oneself.

Where are the bus inspectors?
