Several cars went up in flames in the parking area of a shopping centre in New York on Monday, injuring at least 18 firefighters and three civilians.

The New York Post reported that the fire started inside the parking garage at Kings Plaza Shopping Center in Brooklyn at around 8:30 am. The blaze then spread to an additional floor where more cars were burned up.

The New York City Fire Department said 200 firefighters were operating on the scene of the rapidly-spreading fire, as dramatic images showed thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky. The fire department said injuries, none life-threatening, were mostly due to smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.
