A man has landed a one-month effective jail term after playing fast and loose with a bail condition whereby he was to sign the bail book within a time-limit prescribed by the court.

Clayton Cremona, 33 from St Venera, was arraigned under arrest on Monday.

The prosecution explained how the man had repeatedly turning up late to sign the bail book, claiming to have been delayed by work commitments.

Rather than present a fresh request for a variation of the time-limit laid down in his bail decree, the man had persisted in his errant behaviour until the police decided to put their foot down, pressing charges for breach of bail.

The man was further charged with being a recidivist.

Upon the man’s own admission, Magistrate Gabriella Vella declared him guilty, revoked bail and sentenced him to a one-month effective jail term, whilst sparing the accused the forfeiture of the bail bond totalling €10,000.

Inspector Frank Anthony Tabone prosecuted.

Lawyer Charmaine Cherrett was legal aid counsel.
