A man was shot dead at his office in Qormi yesterday and his business partner is expected to be charged with his murder in the coming days.

Fenech stops short of ruling out income tax cuts this year

Finance Minister Tonio Fenech yesterday stopped short of ruling out income tax cuts in the upcoming budget, an electoral promise many were eagerly anticipating.

“It is too early to rule it out but, clearly, with every passing day it becomes harder to make this choice because the growth projections around us are not positive,” he said, when questioned by the media.

PM ordered to pay Lm1,700 in moral damages for violation of human rights

A court yesterday ordered the prime minister to pay Lm1,700 in moral damages to Major Peter Manduca as compensation for violation of fundamental human rights.

Major Manduca had asked the court to declare that his right to a fair hearing within a reasonable time had been violated after the Agricultural Leases (Control)  Board took over 11 years to decide on a procedural point in a case he had filed against former Chief Justice Hugh Harding.

Major Manduca had leased a garden in Sliema to Judge Harding, and has requested the board to order that the garden be returned to him on the termination of the lease.

Judge Harding pleaded the board was not competent to decide the case, and it was only after 11 years and 66 postponements that the procedural point was decided upon.

The prime minister, respondent in the constitutional case filed by Major Manduca, claimed the case had been wrongly instituted against him, for he was in no manner responsible for the delays complained of by the applicant.

A baby with four great-grandparents

A very lucky baby was born to Mr and Mrs Alfred Magri, of St Julian’s, on Sunday afternoon. The baby girl has four grandparents and four great-grandparents alive.

The family tree is exhaustive but if one keeps to Mariella’s grandparents and great-grandparents, the list of names is not difficult to follow.

Mr Magri’s parents are Mr and Mrs Joseph Magri, of Sliema, and his wife’s parents are Mr and Mrs Frank Micallef, of St Julian’s.

The mother of Frank Micallef’s wife, Lonza Baldacchino, is 68, and resides in St Julian’s.

The fourth great-grandparent of Emanuel and Mariella is Agnes Castaldi, 78, of Sliema, mother of Evelyn, wife of Joseph Magri.
