During summer, a group of 20 secondary school students took part in the Go4Research internship programme during which they worked on a wide range of research projects at the University of Malta’s Faculty of Science and the Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy under the supervision of researchers and other academic members of staff.

The students were given the opportunity to participate in these projects after earlier taking part in the Malta Junior Science Olympiad and being awarded Go4Research summer internships.

The projects dealt with topics ranging from fieldwork in nature to studying the exposure of electromagnetic waves from an antenna, and worked on problems such as geometrical probability and statistical analysis.

The programme is organised by the Faculty of Science in collaboration with the Directorate Learning and Assessment Programmes (DLAP) and the Education Ministry. A concluding event was recently held during which a video highlighting the students’ experience was shown and the students received certificates of participation. Posters about their projects were exhibited.

The participants were addressed by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo, University rector Prof. Alfred Vella, Faculty of Science dean Prof. Charles Sammut, DLAP director Gaetano Bugeja, US Ambassador G. Kathleen Hill, Prof. Liberato Camilleri and Audrey Zammit – two researchers involved in the projects – and two students, Faye Magro and Matthias Pellicano, who talked about the skills they gained.
