New MSc in Biomedical Engineering – Biomechanics

A new full-time course leading to a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering – Biomechanics is be­ing offered by the University of Malta. The course, which starts next month, is an interfaculty programme of the Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.

The main aim of the programme is to strengthen and develop science and technology capacity in biomedical engineering (BME). BME integrates physical, mathematical and life sciences with engineering principles for the study of biology, medicine and health systems, and for the application of technology to improve health and quality of life. Trained and qualified BME professionals are required worldwide in healthcare systems to design, evaluate, regulate, acquire, maintain, manage and train on safe medical technologies.

The biomedical engineering industry is critically important due to technological development and the potential of new techniques to enhance cure, care and rehabilitation. This represents a major step forward in terms of healthcare and quality of life. BME is fundamental for a variety of highly innovative technologies, products and processes of the healthcare sector, and as a fast-growing multidisciplinary specialisation it generates. Among other considerations it can generate high value added with minimum demand for natural resources, which is a crucial issue for Malta.

This new MSc Biomedical Engineering course will provide career opportunities and access to further study in the vast healthcare area. Abilities gained during the course are generic skills that do not apply only to the field of biomedical engineering but can be transferred to any other engineering and medical activities. It will provide students with multidisciplinary scientific knowledge in engineering, biomedical and scientific fields required for the complete understanding, analysis and advancement of biomedical engineering with particular emphasis on  healthcare. Students on the course – whether engineers, medics, scientists or healthcare graduates – will be provided with all necessary skills to augment and advance their capacity, thereby providing a platform for collaborative work in the multidisciplinary BME area. The programme, spread over four semesters, is based on the expansion of engineering skills applied to biological systems that will encourage the innovative and creative approach to problem solving.

The course will provide an academic multidisciplinary content, as well as an opportunity to deve­lop a common language that will im­prove the communication bet­ween the two fields – me­di­­cine and engineering. Students completing the programme will develop an understanding of the latest re­search and concepts of medical and healthcare, together with newest digital technologies and theories applied in the healthcare systems.
