Gżira United president Sharlon Pace admitted that the Malta national team faces a bleak future after the Premier Division Standing Committee approved a motion to increase the number of overseas players in Malta's top flight to 11.
At present, clubs in the Maltese top-flight can field up to seven overseas players with the other members forming part of the team's starting formation have to be Maltese.
However, during a PDSC meeting held on Wednesday, Premier League clubs have discussed the idea of increasing the number of overseas players eligible to play in the top-tier of Maltese football to 11.
A vote was taken between the club delegates present and the motion was approved. Floriana and St Andrews did not attend the meeting.
The PDSC is expected to present the motion during the upcoming MFA Council meeting where delegates present will discuss the motion and a vote of approval would be taken.
Pace said that Gżira United were one of the clubs to object to the motion as it seriously put at risk the future of Maltese players.
"I don't agree with the decision as in my opinion it will leave a huge impact on the national team and also the future of Maltese players in our domestic competitions," Pace said.
"At present, we have four players who are assured of playing, which in my opinion is also too little. But that will all change next season as with 11 overseas players it's very unlikely that clubs will prefer to field Maltese players over foreign players given the investment they would have done to bring these players to Malta."
The Premier Division Standing Committee have yet to make official announcement on their decision.
Meanwhile, the Malta Football Association (Malta FA) issued a statement saying that it has yet to receive any proposal from PDSC.
"In light of reports in the media regarding the possibility of increasing the number of foreign players in the BOV Premier League, it is to be noted that the Malta Football Association has not yet received any proposal in this regard, the statement said.
"If such proposal were to be put forward, it would be subject to the evaluation and endorsement of the Malta FA Council, which is the body that comprises all clubs and stakeholders."
