Malta is creating jobs faster than any other EU country, new figures suggest.

Statistics released by Brussels on Tuesday show that employment growth in the second quarter this year was 5.5 per cent higher than in the same period in 2017.

That is the largest year-on year increase registered in any of the EU member states.

The EU average was just 1.4 per cent change.

Eurostat said the number of persons employed increased by 0.4 per cent in both the euro area (EA19) and the entire EU in the second quarter of this year when compared with the previous quarter.

The EU's statistics office estimates that, in the second quarter of 2018, 238.9 million men and women were employed in the EU of which 158 million were in the euro area.

These are the highest levels ever recorded in both areas.
