Pope Francis called sexual abuse “an absolute monstrosity, a terrible sin that contradicts everything that the Church teaches”.
Despite the Pope’s harsh, uncompromising words, some Maltese Catholics persist in resorting to evasive tactics. They plead “human frailty” on behalf of priests who seduce innocent children, as long as the seduced child is not a member of their immediate family.
Other Maltese Catholics try to excuse paedophile priests by quoting the Christian stock phrase about the “casting of stones”. They conveniently ignore the other phrase by Jesus regarding the “millstones”.
