Mellieħa festa patrons were treated to a spectacular fireworks display on Friday night as part of its annual Maria Bambina celebrations.

People gathered in front of the town’s church and watched the pyrotechnics display light up the night sky, with the streams of colour being let off in synchrony to music.

A video shot by Times of Malta reader Josef Cauchi shows crowds packing the town square as the display keeps them riveted.

The display appeared to be in jeopardy last month after the Marija Bambina fireworks society was denied permission to let fireworks off from the roof of the parish church – a practice the Curia has forbidden.

Instead, the society built a scaffolding structure in front of the parish church and used it to let off the fireworks as a stop-gap solution.
