The Labour Party's executive has approved the party's first group of candidates for next May's European Parliament elections.

They are popular dancer Felix Busuttil, former l-orizzont editor Josef Caruana, current MEP and former journalist Miriam Dalli,  the prime minister's consultant on EU affairs Cyrus Engerer, financial practitioner James Grech, lawyer Alex Saliba and lawyer and former MP Joe Sammut.

More candidates will be approved in the coming weeks, the party said.

Mr Engerer is returning to the hustings after having dropped out in the 11th hour in the last elections after a court conviction.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said the elections were a challenge to his party, since it would be almost halfway through its second term. However, thanks to its strong line-up and hard work, the party would seek the best result possible.

MEP and former prime minister Alfred Sant has not said yet whether he will seek re-election. Fellow MEP Marlene Mizzi has said she is calling it a day.

The PN and the PL won three seats each in the last elections, although the PL got more votes.
