Sanctuaries and NGOs caring for animals are to benefit from a free veterinary service launched by the government on Thursday.

Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri said €80,000 had been allocated for the service, as announced in the budget.

He explained that 11 NGOs currently care for 1,097 animals - 245 dogs, 829 cats, and 23 horses.

In terms of the scheme, €40 are being given for every dog or cat and €160 for every horse.
