A kangaroo has been spotted several times in Hellmonsoedt district in Austria, prompting numerous witticisms about how often the country is confused with Australia.

Kangaroos are indigenous to Australia and the sightings in a European country have caused a flurry of bemused phonecalls to the officials.

The police have called around all the zoos in the area but no one has reported one to be missing.

As the mystery deepens, the police are hoping that the owner will come forward.

The Austrian police said kangaroos are shy and unlikely to cause any damage.
