Preliminary works to extend Malta’s largest beach have gotten under way, with Projects Malta drilling several cores along Għadira Bay to learn more about what lies beneath its sands.

In a statement issued on Tuesday afternoon, the Tourism Ministry advised bathers and mariners that the project to extend Għadira had started and apologised in advance for any inconvenience caused.

Malta Tourism Authority representatives would be on site to provide assistance or information, Projects Malta said.

Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi had announced plans to extend Għadira Bay in the summer of 2017, and plans to make the Mellieħa beach up to 40m wider were submitted to planning authorities last March.
