€3 million study on the social determinants of health

The impact of social conditions on the health sector will be studied in a €3 million study project commissioned by the Ministry of Health.

The study, based on interviews with a random 5,000 people is the first of its kind in Malta.

Health Minister Chris Fearne said the six-month study, entitled ‘Social Determinants of Health’ would inform future policy.

Once completed, next year, the study will give a snapshot of the links between a Maltese person’s health and a host of socio-economic factors. These include income, lifestyle, health literacy, health priorities, addiction, social media use, among other things.

The study project will be followed by training of medical professionals and policy workers.

The funding for the study and training is being provided by the EU.
