The Democratic Party has criticised Opposition leader Adrian Delia for continuing to refuse to nominate an Opposition representative to the Waste Management Committee.

It recalled that a year ago it had proposed its own MP, Godfrey Farrugia, to the position but the nomination was turned down. (It was turned down by the government, which said it was up to the leader of the opposition to make the nomination.)

The party said last week's fire at Maghtab further reinforced the need for Opposition representation on the committee.

"Unfortunately, Wasteserv has been notoriously used as a political ball by both major parties and has never been allowed to work without political interference, and more so, at present," it said.

"The fact remains that Dr Delia is not accepting his own share of the responsibility, as he refused to contribute towards Malta's waste management solutions when offered the opportunity."

The party also renewed its call for a public inquiry into last week's blaze.
