The Gozo diocese is setting up two hostels in Malta to host Gozitan students.

Gozo Bishop Mario Grech made the announcement in a letter being read in churches in Gozo.

The hostels are being set up in properties made available by the Augustinians and the Sisters of St Joseph in Guardamanga for boys and in Gzira for girls.

Mgr Grech said the diocese had made a substantial investment to alter the properties.

He invited applications to the administrative secretary of the diocese and said a nominal fee will be requested. Priority will be given to those in need.

Mgr Grech thanked the Augustinians and the Sisters of St Joseph and said this project was an investment to encourage young people to study. He regretted that some young people had to give up their studies in Malta because their parents could not keep up with soaring rental costs.

The Guardamangia hostel has 14 rooms and the one in Gzira, seven.

The need for hostels for Gozitan students has long been felt. The government in February said it was considering one.
