The Aquatic Sport Association is hosting a swimming camp open for aspiring young swimmers, aged between 10 and 16 years at the National Pool in Tal-Qroqq next weekend.

The swimming camp is providing participants with a unique opportunity as they will be mentored by Ben Proud, the fastest swimmer in the world.

Briton Proud, 23, is currently the world, Commonwealth and European champion and he will be coaching the youngsters alongside Anthony James, another former British swimmer who competed at the Olympics and is also a coach at Plymouth Leander, and Maltese champion Matthew Zammit.

These three coaches bring together a vast blend of knowledge and experience including a BSc (Hons) in psychology and physiotherapy as well as their coaching and personal experience to provide a day full of information and inspiration to Malta’s aspiring swimmers.

Zammit, who is the liaison and organiser for the camp, is hoping that this rare opportunity of being mentored by established professionals, will provide young Maltese swimmers with the tools to take their sporting career to the next level, by bringing back all the latest techniques, research and skills from leading centres abroad.

“The inspiration behind the camp has always been the support I have been offered by local associations such as the ASA throughout my career,” Zammit said in a statement.

“I hope that through this camp we will be able to pass on all the things I, as well as my colleagues, have learnt over the years to the aspiring Maltese athletes, to help push the level of swimming here even further.

“We are introducing for the first time in Malta, DMS (Dynamic Movement Skills) training.

“This is a unique form of land training which can be done by swimmers to stimulate the nervous system into working faster and more co-ordinated. allowing a faster rate of leg work.’’

The camp being held on September 1 and 2 will feature demonstrations and coaching advice in the pool by Proud.

Psychology sessions

There will also be classroom sessions headlined by James, covering the psychology of swimming, and Zammit who will talk about the land training requirements and physiology of swimming.

Proud will also feature in a classroom session, passing on his acquired knowledge to the kids, as well as offering time for the young athletes to have their questions answered by their swimming idols.
