Benna has blamed a shortage of milk on the fact that cows “naturally produce less milk” during the summer months.

“In the past few weeks, the supply of raw milk was not meeting the demand,” the company admitted.

Benna also said blamed the shortage on the increasing population, saying there has been an increase in demand for local fresh milk and fresh milk products.

Since Benna uses only 100% fresh Maltese milk, as is declared on the milk carton, the company does not use of imported milk or milk alternatives so this shortage cannot be addressed by the importation of milk or other milk alternatives from abroad, it said.

The company is now working on a "strategic long-term plan" to try to meet the increased demands throughout the whole year, taking into consideration the population growth and increased demand for its products.

The shortage would be addressed in a few weeks once the temperature started cooling down again, a spokesman said.
