The young volunteers of the Order of Malta hosted the 35th International Summer Camp for Young Disabled, which took place in Britain. This is a wonderful week, held each year in a different country, focusing on the young disabled who are not children but have an age range from 17 to 29 – just like their hosts. This year’s theme is ‘Be courageous’.

The project builds warmth and enduring friendships. Daniel Camilleri is counting his seventh international camp – this time as team leader, ably assisted by Rachel Barthet, who has been attending even longer. A most enthusiastic guest is Malcolm Camilleri – this is his sixth camp and he looks forward to it every year. “It’s fun!” he beams.

To organise their participating group of 20 – nine guests, the rest volunteers – takes four to five months of preparation. Some of the party are first-timers, some old hands.

Daniel explains: “It’s a holiday for our guests and a break for their parents too. The volunteers give a lot, but the guests give so much back! It’s a great combination of satisfaction and kindess.”
