The editorial ‘The lesson from Genoa’ (August 18), quite rightly notes that the government’s first duty is to ensure public safety by inspecting bridges and flyovers.

To these one should add inspection of all blocks of apartments higher than the normal six levels and are 10 years old. Worse than bridges and flyovers, apartments are continually tampered with from the inside, where changes to existing structure is carried out without any supervision.
