Pictures taken on Friday show how some of the migrants who were evicted from a former cattle farm in Qormi have set up mattresses and blankets in nearby fields.

Some 120 immigrants, many of whom came to Malta from Italy, were kicked out of the farm where they were living on Monday.

The pictures show the migrants were sleeping on mattresses thrown on the ground or placed on wooden pallets. Others found refuge in a Qormi farm close by, after learning about it through friends.

One 27-year-old migrant told Times of Malta he had felt "abandoned" after being evicted.

"We had to find a place to live in immediately but many of us had already paid our rent when we were kicked out so it was hard for us to afford a new place."

The farm was closed off by the authorities after it was found that it was illegally housing the migrants in "inhumane conditions", the Planning Authority said. The migrants said were paying around €100 per month to live in the cow stalls.
