Weeks of relative calm in Kabul were shattered on Wednesday (August 15) by a suicide attack on an educational center in a mainly Shi'ite area in the west of the Afghan capital.

At least 48 people were killed and 67 wounded, the health ministry said.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast, which came after several weeks of relative calm in the Afghan capital, but previous attacks on Shi'ite targets in the area have been claimed by Islamic State.

The Taliban, who have been intensifying their attacks against military and government centers in recent weeks, issued a statement denying involvement.
