As part of its Net Zero Impact Utility project, the Water Services Corporation is set to invest an initial €4 million in the latest sewage treatment technology.

The technology allows for easy retrofitting of existing plants which will result in better treatment performance and in a significant reduction in associated smell and chemical and energy use.

The technology will provide the corporation with a more flexible and resilient sewage treatment portfolio. Its current plants will therefore function in a more efficient manner, the corporation said in a statement yesterday.

The improved sewage treatment capacity will also present new opportunities in terms of new water production.

Retrofitting will result in better performance and significantly reduced smell

This project is part of a bigger strategy through which the corporation will be investing around €35 million in sewage infrastructure upgrades.

“It is very important to understand that the sewage system is very complex and delicate, and that infrastructure is damaged through the improper use of the urban sewer. It is fundamental that only human toilet waste and degradable toilet paper are discharged in the system.

“Any suspected foul play or problems with sewers can be reported to WSC on Freephone 8007 6400,” the corporation said.

The full tender document can be accessed at www.wsc.com.mt/tenders/. Bids will close on September 27.

The project is being led by the Water Services Corporation and may be co-financed through cohesion funds.
