Plans have been submitted to build a 34-metre long pedestrian bridge across Gudja’s Vjal l-Avjazzjoni.

As proposed, the bridge will be accessed using spiralling access ramps which conform to disability access guidelines, to allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the dual carriageway.

Infrastructure Malta hopes to begin works on the pedestrian bridge later this year, pending Planning Authority approval.

A public call for offers for the final design and construction of the new bridge will be issued in the coming weeks, with the authority expecting bidders to propose designs using environmentally-friendly materials such as recycled plastic planks.

In a separate project underway this summer, Infrastructure Malta is widening Vjal l-Avjazzjoni to add a third lane and a new cycle lane in the north-bound carriageway, from Malta International Airport and the Kirkop tunnels, towards Luqa, Qormi, Santa Luċija and Paola.

The new vehicle lane will extend from the airport roundabout bypass lane built last year to improve the link between the Kirkop tunnels and Vjal l-Avjazzjoni, towards Luqa, the authority said.
