Sufficient evidence exists for a man charged with the murder of his mother and aunt in Għargħur last month to be placed under a bill of indictment, a court declared on Monday.

Kevin Micallef, a 42-year old self-employed man allegedly stabbed his elderly relatives following a lurking suspicion that they had been putting substances in his drink.

The murders took place at around 6.15am on Monday, July 23, in the washroom of the family residence in Għargħur.

The compilation of evidence against Mr Micallef continued on Monday. Four police officers who quickly arrived at the crime scene described how the accused had opened the door of the house to let them in. He had blood on his shirt and shorts.

Prosecuting Inspector Kurt Zahra requested the court to appoint an expert to take the accused’s fingerprints for the purpose of comparing them with those lifted from the scene of the crime.

Magistrate Monica Vella acceded to the request, also taking note of the fact that defence counsel Francois Dalli was not making a request for bail.

Before adjourning the case to September, the magistrate delivered a ‘prima facie’ decree, thereby she declared that there was sufficient evidence for the accused to be placed under a bill of indictment.
