The US got two new citizens on Thursday. The parents of first lady Melania Trump - Viktor and Amalija Knavs were sworn in, in a ceremony in New York.

Their naturalization comes as the Trump administration faces mounting criticism about its zero tolerance immigration policy that resulted in thousands of children getting separated from their parents.

Melania Trump moved to the US in 1996 from Slovenia to pursue a career as a model and became a citizen in 2006. Her parents had been living in the US as permanent residents with green cards.
