A 22-year-old man was on Friday fined €4,000 after he admitted to getting drunk and assaulting a police officer.

Ismail Ahmed Ali, of Somalia, apologised to the court for being drunk and disorderly and assaulting a police officer in the early hours of Friday morning outside the Scotsman’s Pub in Paceville.

Magistrate Claire Micallef Stafrace gave him a six month sentence, suspended for one year. She also fined him €4,000.

Police Inspector Nikolai Sant said the prosecution did not have an issue with the accused’s request to pay the amount over a number of years as he had steady employment in a hotel.

Lawyer Raisa Colombo was legal aid.
