The extension of other potential bathing areas will be studied in the coming months, Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi said on Saturday, after the completion of works at Balluta bay.

A 20-metre sandy beach has taken shape once again between Sliema and St Julian's as the large barges were cleared from the area in Balluta after days of work.

Dr Mizzi said environmental and scientific studies were carried out intended to replenish the bay with the sand it lost because of natural causes along the years.

The sandy bay is equipped with life guards, showers, a beach supervisor and recycling bins.

The bay is not permanent and other interventions will be needed in future because of the sea currents.
