Spazju Kreattiv is dedicating this month to Czech-born director Miloš Forman, whose contribution to the craft of directing has been a source of inspiration for generations of film-makers.

Four of his films are being shown, starting with Loves of Blonde tomorrow.

The 1966 film is set in the Czech countryside where a shoe factory owner petitions the People’s Army to station a division of soldiers in his town, where the women outnumber the men 16 to one. The arrival of the troops is greeted with great excitement, but the girls in the town are disappointed to see that the men are older reservists, and not the strapping young men they had envisioned. Still, when a band plays at the local pub, the girls show up to be ogled by the older men, many of whom are married.

A trio of reservists sends a bottle of wine to Andula, Marie and Jana and the girls argue over whether or not to acknowledge the gesture. However, Andula catches the eye of thecomparatively dashing young pianist, Milda. After spending a night together, the travelling musician then leaves town. Andula, who has fallen in love with him, decides to journey to Prague to track him down.

A low-key black-and-white ensemble comedy, Loves of a Blonde was cast predominantly with non-professional actors. The film was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film and jumpstarted the international film-making career of Forman.

Loves of a Blonde, certified 15, is showing tomorrow at St James Cavalier, Valletta, at 8.30pm. Other films by the director to be shown this month are The Firemen’s Ball on August 12, Amadeus on August 19 and The People v Larry Flynt on August 26. All films start at 8.30pm.
