Melita and GO have put their rivarly aside and unveiled a new sports broadcast offering that will see subscribers of either service finally enjoy all top matches and competitions.

The Total Sports Network channels, which will be available to subscribers of both companies’ TV deals, will air English Premier League, Italian Serie A, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, German Bundesliga, BOV Premier League, FA Cup, Formula 1, Moto GP, tennis and a host of other sports.

The eight channels will be offered in high definition, at prices depending on their respective package deals.

The two companies have for years been at each other’s throats, as they refused to share their sports screening rights with each other.

This meant that sports lovers could only watch a selection of top flight sporting events on their preferred service provider.

The two companies’ chief executives, Harald Roesch from Melita and Nikhil Patil from GO, described the deal as “possibly the best premium package in Europe”.

“We have agreed to pool our rights with GO for the benefit of all our customers who follow sports. The breadth of premium sports we’ll be offering will be unparalleled in Europe, and marks another step forward for us in delighting our customers,” Mr Roesch said at a press launch on Friday.

“By combining TV broadcast capabilities and rights of both GO and Melita, customers in Malta and Gozo can now enjoy a richer sports experience. This has been a long time request from customers, and we are glad to be in a position to make this happen,” Mr Patil said.

The sports channel deal prices will vary depending on the type of package customers sign up to, but Mr Patil said it would be around €6.

“In the UK I used to pay that every day,” Mr Patil said.

Parliamentary Secretary Silvio Schembri, who is responsible for the digital economy, welcomed the agreement saying it could be a model for the rest of Europe to follow.
