On Wednesday morning, I returned home from a training mountain bike ride to find an ambulance as well as police and civil protection department vehicles near the house of elderly neighbours. Apparently, a woman had fallen and remained unaided for 28 hours.

The rescuers smashed a window to gain access to the lady and, in true Maltese tradition, left broken glass on the footpath. Having two rescue dogs, we cleared it up. I took it to the recycling bin outside Xagħra, which, as usual, was overflowing. Being glass, it was not possible to force it into the bin, so I left it next to a mound of bottles.

A few days later, I received a fine for €116 for doing so. No more waste segregation for me. If only they were so stringent on drinking!
