Winemakers are expecting a better year as the availability of good grapes improved after dry winters in previous years risked halting wine production, Agriculture Parliamentary Secretary Clint Camilleri said on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference at the viticulture centre in Buskett, Mr Camilleri said that while in previous years winemakers struggled to produce wine as a result of the dry winters Malta had experienced, the situation this year seemed to have improved.

He insisted that yields were expected to be much higher than in the past two years.

“We will continue with education campaigns to teach the public about the quality wines produced in our country,” the parliamentary secretary said.

Mr Camilleri said that 90% of the grapes were expected to go for the production of quality wines, with the majority being of the Girgentina, Ġellewża and Chardonnay variety.
