I refer to John Gullaumier’s letter about unanswered prayers (July 27). I would add another great “unanswered prayer”, Jesus’s own prayer at Gethsemane.

He asked his Father to remove the chalice of suffering that he saw coming to him to drink. Far from removing it his Father let him drink it to the dregs.

The real answer came with the resurrection for Christ and for us. Woe to us had the Father just removed the chalice!

It would be interesting to ask people like me who believe that ‘more things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of’ what could be the real answer to the prayers for peace in the Middle East?

My wish is for less greed and more common sense in the West by curbing the arms trade.

What would others propose to God?
