The superhero movie, based on the Marvel Comics series, is a sequel to the 2015 film Ant-Man and the 20th feature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Paul Rudd resumes the role of Scott Lang, a reformed thief and an electronics expert who shrinks in size and increases in strength when he wears the Ant-Man suit. Evangeline Lilly also resumes the role of Hope van Dyne, who here takes on a leading role.
The sequel, once again directed by Peyton Reed, finds Scott Lang (Rudd) grappling with the consequences of his choices as both a superhero and a father. Approached by Van Dyne (Lilly) and Dr Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Lang must once again don the Ant-Man suit and fight alongside the Wasp (Lilly). The urgent mission soon leads to secret revelations from the past as the dynamic duo finds itself in an epic battle against a new enemy.
The film earned good reviews. Molly Freeman of Screen Rant appeared to be satisfied with the sequel. She wrote: “Ant-Man and the Wasp is a hilarious return to the shrinking heroes, but with elevated action and a heartfelt story, it is a well-rounded Marvel sequel.”
Owen Gleiberman of Variety said: “Reed has learned how to operate the heavy machinery of a Marvel superhero movie, yet keep it all light and fast and dizzying.”
And Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post wrote: “Amid a story that seemingly will never end, Paul Rudd brings warmth and modest good humour to one of Marvel’s most ingratiating and sweet-natured chapters.”
Dan Jolin of Empire, however, had only one complaint: “While it proves an all-round well-mounted distraction, Ant-Man and the Wasp undeniably lacks the scale and ambition of recent Marvel entries.”
The film, released in the US on July 6, has so far grossed a total of $395.7 million worldwide.
