Isle of MTV show expected to attract bigger audience

Tonight’s Isle of MTV Malta Special is expected to draw an even bigger audience than last year’s, which had hit the 50,000 mark. There are five acts as opposed to last year’s three. They include Pharrell Williams, lead singer and drummer of the funk-rock band N*E*R*D. A TV crew has come to Malta from Asia specifically to film him. “Once MTV had secured N*E*R*D for the concert, they knew they had the wow factor,” an organiser said.  Last year, that element was in the hands, the voice and the moves of Enrique Iglesias – who is back to perform at the Isle of MTV.

Iglesias ‘in love with Malta’

Enrique Iglesias may not be the freshest act at tonight’s Isle of MTV Malta Special but that has nothing to do with the fact that he’s back for the second year running.

“I’ve fallen in love with the island. I’ve made friends here. In fact, I arrived two days early to do some work and also hang out and relax,” he said. “The water is absolutely stunning. I’ve been all over the world and I’ve seen such beautiful beaches but the water here has no reason to envy other places,” he says.

However, he has been most impressed by the “amazing” friendliness of the Maltese.

Port strike is called off

The Department of Information last night issued the following statement: “At a meeting held between the importers of cement and the Port and Industry Section of the General Workers’ Union, an agreement was reached and the port strike has now been completely called off.”

Last night, the Government Gazette printed a special supplement to the Port Workers Ordinance 1962  which in effect gives a four per cent increase in tariffs. These are operative from today except where unloading or loading had already commenced. Importers and exporters are still insisting that the law authorises “any importer or exporter” of any cargo to withdraw and or to transport “any cargo imported or to be exported by him from or to any customs shed, bonded store, warehouse, verandah, quay or other place of deposit” or to have “such transactions or services performed for him by his own regular employees”.
