Music stars have paid tribute following the death of Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul.

The death of the co-founder and drummer of the heavy metal band, aged 54, was announced on Facebook and Twitter.

The US heavy metal band said: "Vincent Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away. Paul is best known for his work as the drummer in the bands Pantera and Hellyeah."

It said there would be no further details, adding: "The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time."

Billy Idol was among those paying tribute, writing: "Sad to hear of Vinnie Paul of #Pantera passing...great guy...RIP."

Kiss star Paul Stanley wrote: "So sad to hear of the death of Vinnie Paul. Loved when Pantera did shows with us and in later years Vinnie was always front and centre at all KISS shows. RIP and condolences to his family."

Slash wrote: "Tragic news about Vinnie Paul today. He was one of the warmest people I knew. A truly good and fun friend. We're going to miss you more than you could possibly have known. RIP buddy."

Paul formed Pantera with his brother in 1981, in Texas, and the band split in 2003.
