Iran was 1-0 down against Spain and with seconds to spare, what better time for Milad Mohammadi to try a somersault throw in?

The winger, 24, kissed the ball and pointed to the sky before attempting an outrageous somersault throw-in during the final seconds of the game.

But midway through the flip, the Iranian appeared to have lost all momentum and instead settled for a safer option, throwing the ball to a closer team-mate.

His trick did not change the score and Iran lost to Spain but for what it's worth it will most definitely be remembered, with many suggesting this is the funniest moment of the World Cup so far.

The Iranian team put up a good fight against a rather disappointing Spanish side, but it was not enough to frustrate their efforts in the end.

The video assistant referee, which has produced mixed results since the start of the competition, rightfully disallowed an Iranian goal, abruptly bringing an end to their celebrations.

Nonetheless, Mohammadi's antics gave football fans around the world something to laugh about.

As one might expect, the move was mocked in the usual hilariously ruthless fashion on social media.
