A pastoral centre in St Ursula Street, Valletta will be rehabilitated to create a centre for youth projects, project manager Maurizio Lapira said on Wednesday.

The Santu Rokku pastoral centre was already used by the youth fellowship organisation Tabgha Foundation, Mr Lapira said.

The Planning Authority signed a €288,000 contract with the Valletta local council to finance the project. The restoration will take place as part of the Development Planning fund, a PA fund which allows towns and villages to invest in the urban areas.

The property, which belongs to the Curia, will house various activities for young people, including Catholic lessons and arts and crafts centres.

Speaking at the signing, Valletta mayor Alexei Dingli said that over time, areas where youth used to gather were closing down.

“There are fewer areas where young people can get together in a safe space where there are grown-ups to help with their formation,” Prof. Dingli said.

Infrastructure minister Ian Borg said that the project allows developers to give back to the community. He insisted that every type of development leaves some form of impact.
