The Nationalist Party on Tuesday called for the appointment of more judges and magistrates and a separation of roles for magistrates involved in inquiries and in deciding cases.

In a statement, the party observed that the government was shortly expected to nominate three judges and three magistrates.

According to EU data, Malta had the least number of judges per capita and this would still continue to be the case.

The law established the number of judges at 25, but this number would still not be achieved when the new appointments were made (There are currently 20 judges).

Furthermore, although the law did not limit the number of magistrates, even in this case, more needed to be appointed so that magistrates could handle inquiries - such as those on corruption and the Caruana Galizia murder - and also decide cases, within a reasonable time.
